Many people do not know that tomatoes come in a variety of different colors. Tomatoes not only come in the typical red and green colors, they also come in purple, black, pink, orange, white, yellow, and variegated. In fact, green tomatoes are not always indicative to tomatoes that are not quite ripe. There are a couple different varieties of green tomatoes, such as Green Zebra, which is a green striped tomato, as well Aunt Ruby’s German Green tomato, which is a green tomato with a pink blush. Green tomatoes are known for their mild, spicy flavor.

Green tomato seeds can be had from several seed companies. A simple search online will bring up many places to look for the seeds you want. It is difficult to find seedlings in the market for green tomatoes, so starting them from seed is your best bet. Once your seeds arrive, you’ll need to prepare an indoor area for the seedbed.

Find out when your last expected frost date is. You want to plant your seeds in a good quality sterile seed growing mix at least 6 to 8 weeks before that date. Go through your seeds and separate them. Sometimes they stick together during packing. Plant more seeds than you think you’ll need. Not all the seeds will germinate, and you can always give some seedlings away to friends and family.

These seeds grow just like any other tomato plant. Plant them ” deep in apot, you should water them with as little water as you can. The trick is to keep them moist.Green tomatoes seeds germinate best when the soil is around 75⁰ F and 90⁰ F. You may want to cover the seeds with aplastic hood to help with the germination

Once the seeds begin to sprout, you will need to adjust the temperature of the plant slightly. You will want to drop the temperature down to between 60⁰F and 70⁰F. Also, you will want to expose the seedlings to sufficient lighting in order to keep them from getting leggy. Tomato plants love windows facing the south. If you don’t have access to a window, then you may want to consider putting the plants under a full spectrum fluorescent light, placed just a few inches above the pots.

Once the little sprouts have their second or third set of true leaves (they’ll look like tomato leaves, not seed leaves), transplant them into 4″ pots so they have more room to grow.

Before the green tomato seeds are transplanted outside. they need to be harden. You can obtain this by taking them outside for some hours during day and then taking them back inside. As days goes by ,you can keep adding how long they stay outside. In no time they will be used to the outside life .

Once the tomatoes are used to the temperatures outside, plant them in the garden. Be sure to put tomato cages or other supports around the plants if they are a variety that grows tall.
