Mom Needs a Spa Getaway

Monday, June 16th, 2008
by Dr. Noel Swanson

With a hectic family life, most of us will never be able to find the time for a full, pampering spa treatment. But that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a shorter treatment, say a facial and a massage. As Mother’s Day approaches, think of how great it would be for mom to be able to enjoy some relaxation. Give her a gift certificate to the spa.

A facial leaves you with a feeling that is hard to duplicate. Afterwards you will feel completely clean and refreshed. When you also get a massage, it makes the whole world seem like a better place. You can close your eyes and listen to beautiful music in a softly lit room as you enjoy your escape.

If you have never been to a spa before, here are a few things to know before you go. Before your massage, enjoy the hot tubs and saunas they offer to start relaxing. If you are getting a facial, here’s what to expect. Your face will be exfoliated and cleaned to make your skin softer.

If you can, get both the facial and massage. Not everyone is comfortable removing their clothes for their massage, the first time. But, the massage center will give you sheets and other items to cover your body. Remember, these are professionals you are working with, and they understand your concerns. Also remember to drink a lot of water before you go to your appointment so you will not dehydrate during your sauna time. It has an added bonus of helping your body in cleansing.

This is time to relax and enjoy a pampering. If you do have concerns, talk to the people at the spa before you start, so you can get them out of the way. This way you will free your mind of concerns and be able to enjoy the massage. Let yourself go, and let the masseuse do their job, and you will feel better than you have in a long time.

What are you waiting for? Go to the spa!

Importance of Insurance In Your Life

If you own a home then you will certainly want to have a suitable amount of property security. Not having adequate could be disastrous should a fire or other natural disaster occur and destroy part or your entire home. That is because if you have a very high deductible or more you may find that it is as if you don’t even have cover simply because you can’t come up with that amount of cash.

People should evaluate what they want the most when it comes to insurance. That is because having enough policy in the areas that are most needed is better than not having enough across the board. Disability insurance is also important should you become disabled and is unable to work.

Figure out how much money you could manage to pay for health coverage at a moment’s notice should you need an immediate operation or something of that nature. If you work for a company then you more than likely already have this insurance through your company. How would you rebuild without adequate insurance benefits? If you are the major breadwinner in your home then you may want to revisit your budget and find a way to afford this type of coverage. Since this would be very difficult if not impossible it is highly recommended to have enough, or more than enough, property insurance.

If you pay for your own health cover then you will have to bump up your policy and pay as much per month for the best policy you can possibly afford. That way you will know that whatever happens you will be covered health wise. This is really important because all too often people are under insured and can’t receive the medical treatment they need as a result. It might take some sacrificing, but you really have to make adequate room in your budget for the cover you and your family need in case of a life-changing event.

Keep all of this information in mind when you are trying to decide what type of cover you want and how much you can afford. When you need health, life, property, disability, and more types of policies it is easy to see in a hurry that the cost can outweigh the amount of money that individuals can pay. Another type of coverage is on your life. This is great coverage to have if you are married with children so that you may leave the family enough money to pay the bills and survive without the additional income.

If you are self-employed there is a high possibility that you do not have this and cannot manage it.

Odour Control - A Cause for Concern

Monday, June 16th, 2008

In a review of all the products used for cleaning by the cleaning industry, “clean-smelling” air fresheners seem to pose little risk. Unfortunately, the “fresh” scent of air fresheners may disguise not only undesirable odours, but may mask a health hazard as well. Chemicals known as phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) can be present in air fresheners are known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems. Individuals whose line of work puts them into frequent contact with these chemicals are at a greater risk of developing long term health problems simply by the nature of their occupation, for example, janitorial and cleaning staff.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)an international non-profit environmental organization, conducted an independent testing on fourteen commonly used air fresheners. They found phthalates in 86 percent (12 of 14) of air freshener products tested, including those sold as “all-natural” or “unscented”. It was noted that none of the products tested listed phthalates on their labels. The NRDC recommends that government regulators should follow up by doing more thorough tests on these products and enact basic measures to limit exposure to these chemicals, in the interest of public health. Meanwhile, it may be sensible to avoid exposure to air fresheners. Especially, avoid using air fresheners in places where pregnant women or children are known to frequent.

Malodours are generally undesirable in indoor environments. Odours themselves do not cause toxicological effects but may increase the reporting of symptoms, for example, headache, nausea, and eye and throat irritation.

Unfortunately, the rise in popularity of air fresheners has fast outpaced awareness of the potential health threats from exposure to the harmful chemicals they may contain. Most phthalates are well known to interfere with production of the male hormone, testosterone, and have been associated with reproductive abnormalities. Numerous animal studies have linked prenatal exposure to certain phthalates with malformations of the genitalia, decreases in testosterone, and reduced sperm production. Studies in humans have shown that phthalates have been associated with changes in hormone levels, poor semen quality, and changes in genital development. Five phthalates-including one found in air freshener products-are listed by the State of California as chemicals “known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.” Phthalate exposure in an indoor environment has also been associated with allergic symptoms and asthma. Because there are no labeling requirements, even so called “natural” products can contain toxic chemicals. It is virtually impossible for the average person to know which products may pose a potential health risk.

While the focus here is on the presence of phthalates in air fresheners, it is worthwhile mentioning that researchers have detected other chemicals of concern to human health in these products as well. The European Consumers’ Organisation, BEUC (Bureau Europen des Consommateurs), commissioned a study in January 2005 to analyse the chemical substances present in indoor air following the use of air fresheners (including incense, natural products, scented candles, gels, aerosols, liquid and electric diffusers. The BEUC study found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in these products at high levels and concluded that VOCs significantly contributed to indoor air pollution. In particular, the European study detected cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde in some air fresheners. Benzene is known to cause leukemia in humans, and formaldehyde has been linked to cancers of the upper airways. The majority of products also contained allergens (such as limonene). People with allergies to these chemicals could have adverse reactions, including rashes or even asthma attacks, from exposure to air freshener products.

Air fresheners are rarely necessary simply because they cannot substitute for good ventilation. The best solution is to open windows to bring in fresh air or to use fans to maintain proper air circulation. Air fresheners also are not the solution to poor air quality; they mask bad odours, however they very almost never eliminate their cause.

Avoid using air fresheners if possible, but when necessary, use products with the lowest levels of phthalates to limit exposure to these toxic chemicals, or use products that are certified by organizations such as Environment Canada’s Environmental Choice Eco Logo or the United States’ Green Seal Programs as being an environmentally responsible product.

Until manufacturers are legislated to fully disclose all ingredients on product labels, just remember this. Each and every time you inhale fumes expelled by air fresheners, the risk of developing a health problem far outweighs any perceived benefit of using the product.
