Babysitter Needed: Screening Your Babysitter

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Rashel Dan

Many people would respond to a babysitter needed advertisement. Not every candidate however is a good choice. The only way for you to find a person who can really take care of your kids the way you want them to is to screen applicants. How do you go about screening possible babysitters?

Ask About Experience

Organized Resume - A person applying to be a sitter would normally have a resume. Good applicants would have organized resumes that would give you an idea about their experience. It is however, still a good idea to personally ask a sitter to expound on these written experiences. You should be interested to know how long she has been babysitting and how many families she has sat for. It is also crucial to ask a potential sitter the ages of kids she has watched over and what kid ages she is most comfortable with. There is a very big difference between taking care of an infant and a toddler.

Ask About Training

You would want to know about their First Aid training and experience. A lot of accidents or emergencies can happen while you are away. You should therefore be interested to know if your potential sitter has had some first aid training. This may also include short courses on emergency preparedness. It is however, unrealistic for you to expect all sitters to have comprehensive courses on these topics. If an applicant doesn’t have extra courses, ask her how she would respond to certain emergencies. Be specific in providing imaginary situations that require prompt action.

Inquire on Real Experiences

Dealing with Crucial Points - Those who respond to your babysitter needed ad have their ways of dealing with situations. You should try to find our how they deal with crucial points. This includes their manner of child discipline, how they put kids to bed and how they deal with difficult kids.

Kids - What is important is that they can deal with kids firmly and creatively without resorting to hitting or shouting at kids. Moreover, a sitter’s techniques should be agreeable to you and should abide by your own personal parenting rules.

Setting Work Preferences

Ask your prospective sitters about their work preferences. Their preferred work hours should match your needs. You may need a sitter for example to stay for the whole night or to stay for the weekend. Aside from work hours, determine too if a sitter would be willing to perform other duties aside from watching over kids. They may need to do some cooking for the kids’ meals for example or they you may need them to take the kids to school. The amount and terms of payment should also be set.

Get References

References are important. Every sitter should have references. Ask for a couple of families your sitter has worked for. Give some of these people a call and ask about their experience with your sitter. It would also be good if your sitter can show some official identity or background check clearances.

Putting in Bamboo Flooring

Saturday, May 31st, 2008
by Clinton Maxwell

As beautiful and popular as hardwood flooring is, many are choosing bamboo flooring as an alternative. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also an environmentally friendly type of home flooring. Many major manufacturers such as Columbia Flooring, Mohawk Flooring and Armstrong Flooring all carry some type of bamboo product for your floors.

Next to steel, bamboo is one of the strongest flooring products. Even stronger than some wood flooring, its durability makes it the perfect choice for your floor. It’s more comfortable on your feet than stone flooring and stronger than linoleum. The density, feel and weight of bamboo is similar to real hardwood flooring.

You have your choice of using an engineered product or solid bamboo. Engineered bamboo is combined with another type of wood, usually a bamboo surface with a core of plywood. You can then stain the bamboo with a coat of urethane as you would with hardwood floor. Bamboo floors are installed in the same way as hardwood floors, either nailed or glued to the sub floor. You can also get some of the newer versions that lock together like tongue and groove. This eliminates the nailing and gluing and gives a “floating floor” appearance.

It’s important that the sub floor is level before you begin installation. If it isn’t level, you can use asphalt shingles to make it level. The sub floor needs to be clean and completely dry as moisture may damage your new floor.

Besides the beauty and ease of bamboo, many are choosing to use bamboo as a means to help the environment. We’re all being made aware of the depletion of hardwood products. Many of these woods such as walnut and oak trees do not grow fast enough to keep up with the “supply and demand”. As a way to save our natural resources such as wood, many environmentally conscious people are choosing to using alternatives such as bamboo. Bamboo, unlike hardwood, grows faster than any other tree used in the manufacture of wood flooring. It only takes five years for a bamboo plant to mature. Even when they’re harvested, new shoots begin to grow quickly.

Bamboo floor is very easy to maintain, needing only dusting and mopping. A cleaning solution consisting of 4 parts water to 1 part vinegar does an excellent job of cleaning with a damp sponge mop. The floor needs to be dried immediately with a towel so the moisture doesn’t damage the bamboo. Simple spills can be wiped with a damp cloth and dried immediately. To keep the floor looking shiny, you can buff it with a buff sander. Your bamboo floor will look new for many years with proper care.

Throughout your dog’s training, there is nothing quite as effective as positive reinforcement by means of a treat. It doesn’t really matter how much you love you dog, or how much your dog loves you; a treat is the perfect reward for a job well done.

However, just as with people, treats full of additives and empty calories are more likely to promote health and behavior problems, rather than reinforce a task well done.

You can purchase them in the flavors of beef, chicken, liver, cod, and even salmon. Wellness Pure Rewards are made with 95% meat. Another tiny type are Dogswell Minis Functional Dog Treats with a lo fat high protein content and easily digestible ingredients.

Has Dog Chewing Gotten Out Of Hand?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008
by Lacy Holly

Have you come home to find one too many of your designer shoes chewed up and have had it with dog chewing? Well you have certainly come to the right place.

This article is going to cover the reasons your dog chews in the first place and how you can stop your dog chewing troubles for good. Not a moment too soon right? At least for the sake for your favorite slippers.

First you need to come to grips with the fact that all dogs have a natural tendency to chew on things. At least you can rest assured in knowing that your dog isn’t trying to destroy your things or get back at you for not taking him on that walk yesterday.

Make sure you start taking action to stop dog chewing as quickly as you can because this little habit can become quite dangerous. Your dog chewing through an electrical wire is a big risk and can hurt him pretty bad.

Thankfully, there are only a few reasons you dog is chewing in the first place. The main one is actually due to boredom. Your dog then starts to chew on things just to be entertained. If this is the case with your dog, give him some toys that are safe for him to chew on.

Separation anxiety is also a big factor. If you work all day and your dog is left at home alone, at least put on the radio or the television.

Animal Planet would probably be the best bet as far as TV channels go. If you don’t have this channel, anything is better than nothing.

When your dog is still a puppy he will go through a teething stage. This is usually where the dog chewing habit develops so make sure to direct your dog to safe chew toys and away from everything else. The sooner you teach him, the better.

Fear can also be a contributing factor. Dogs chew on things when they are afraid. Try to figure out if there is anything scaring or stressing your dog out during the day when you are gone.

Comfort him as much as possible and if there is something scary that goes on while you are away from home, try and alleviate that in any way you can.

Again, turn on the television to keep your dog some company. If nothing else, remember that he is not chewing on your things in anger or trying to upset you.

Have patience and love while dealing with your dog chewing problem and things will work out.

Different Types of Termites

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008
by John Daily

Oftentimes, Termites can be found dwelling in or near your house. Sometimes overt signs, such as fecal remnants, are hard to notice, so Pest Management Professionals are recommended to determine signs of termite damage. These trained professionals are taught, and deal regularly in regards, to find these lurking critters.

Even if you are able to detect that termites are actively roaming your vicinity, locating their nests can be a completely different quest. It requires a great deal of work and energy to locate a termite nest. Sometimes people get so caught up in killing every termite that they see; they forget that a nest is replacing these workers as rapidly as they are perishing. You must ask yourself where termites live and what type of environment would house their colonies before advancing in your endeavors.

Generally, termites live on pieces of wood and underground. However, they can also take shelter within your real estate. It can be difficult to spot this species in your home, so consulting a professional is advised before disregarding their presence.

Subterranean termites are the only termite species that live on top of the soil. They connect to their food through mud tubes. Since they lack eye sight, these tubes serve as an ideal means to find a food source. These pathways can also serve as a way to keep subterranean termites sheltered from natural enemies such as ants.

Where do termites live besides underground? Termites also thrive well in dry wood. Such choice of habitat gave them the name drywood termites. These organisms live in the same place where they get their nutrition. Signs of their nesting activity include leaks, holes and cracks on wood portions of the house such as posts, doors, and flooring. Decayed wood, timber and tree trunks in the yard are also appealing places for drywood termites. Decayed wood is easy to digest and contains fungi that are also good sources of nitrogen for termites.

Termites, like all animals, must live in an environment that is essential to their survival. They need moisture, food, and protection against extreme weather and natural enemies. Think like a termite and you might be able to find their nest.

Remember that termite activity is at its lowest in the winter. However, due to global warming and termite intellect guiding them for a perfect habitat, some termites can continue to feast on your property throughout the winter. You can use this knowledge that has been presented to inspect your property. If you are having trouble, feel free to consult a professional and seek their advice.

Baby Sitting Services: Choosing the Best One

Monday, May 26th, 2008
by Rashel Dan

These days, more and more people are getting baby sitting services. Much of its popularity can also be attributed to the internet. They aren’t exactly like traditional agencies. They also aren’t mere listing sites. Online sitter services are actually the best of both worlds. With a good sitter service, you get an ideal baby sitter at an affordable cost. There are a lot of online sites to choose from though. If you want to find the best, here are some considerations to take note of.

Reputation and Length of Operation

Specialize in Babies - A sitter service should specialize in the field of baby sitting. Most online services however, would naturally claim to be real experts. The best way therefore to find the really good ones would be to take a look at their track record. How long has the sitter service been in business? Although new businesses may be just as good as old ones, it would be a good idea to stick with a company that has had a lot of experience. It shouldn’t just be any kind of experience though. A sitter service should have a long, extensive and expert experience in the field of baby sitting.

Get clients’ feedback. You might get a clue about company experience by reading what clients think. You can get a load of these by visiting independent parenting and sitting forums. Parents who are happy with a particular baby sitting company would be willing to say so online. The same can be said for parents who aren’t happy about a particular service. You would at least know which sitting service has the best reputation.

Services Offered

Baby sitting services should have a variety of services. This is because not every parent would have the same needs. In your case, you may also have varying needs at any given point in your family life. There may be times when you would need stay in sitters. At other times you may just prefer temporary sitter assistance. A good online service should be able to anticipate every client’s needs. There should be a variety of sitters who can stay in, stay out or provide short term service.

Added Services - Aside from the kind of sitters offered, you should also look for other services. The most important of these is the character investigation. Online sitting services should be able to provide you with baby sitter character files with complete clearances. You probably do not want to end up with a sitter who has a criminal history or a drunk driving case.

Screening Procedure

Know more about their screening process. A site’s screening procedure is also important. Will a site perform screening for you or will you be allowed to be the one to screen? If you are an involved parent, you are likely still interested in having a hand at the screening process. Find out how a site will help you do that. How can you schedule interviews with sitters? What kinds of questions can you ask them?

Guarantees

A good online service should have some form of guarantee. Find out what a sitter site will be willing to do for you if you end up not liking your sitter. You may also need to replace a sitter if she has to go for personal reasons. Will a site replace a sitter without extra charge?

Availing of baby sitting services can truly be a great idea. It is crucial though that you pick the right service if you want a good experience with your sitter.

Complexities Of Water Filters Explained

Monday, May 26th, 2008
by Chris Channing

Water filters are used to separate impurities from water. This process can be done by using physical barriers, different chemical processes, or biological means. Filters are necessary for drinking, irrigation, and swimming pools.

There are many different types of common filters. There are media filters, which use sand to filter water as it moves from below the rock and sand to the surface. Screen filters, which utilize a screen that separate fine particles out of the water for irrigation among other things. Disk filters are the main water filters for irrigation. It is much like the screen filter, but instead of a screen it uses small disks stacked on top of each other in order to separate the impurities.

When raw water is in need of treatment slow sand filters can be used. They are usually a length of one to two meters deep. A layer of earth, called the Schmutzdecke layer, which uses bacteria and fungi to purify the water. Using this process exceptionally clean water is left on the surface of the earth.

Rapid sand filters or rapid gravity filters are forms of filtration used municipal water treatment facilities. Coarse sand is used to remove the particles that were previously trapped in flocks by salts of aluminum or iron. The simplest filter still in use today is the cloth filter. This filter can be dangerous because it is not very effective. It is done by using a folded cloth placed in a container. The container is dipped in water and then raised. The cloth is lifted from the container and the filtered water will move through the cloth and into the container.

Filtration has several more complex forms that do not employ physical screens in order to filter the impurities out of water. Using ultra violet rays, water can be purified very effectively. Exposing water to the rays will remove any virus and bacteria that would have previously been in the water. Raw water is normally put through this process but drinking water has more recently been filtered in this way. A drinking water disinfection facility has already been approved for construction in New York that will use ultra violet rays. The facility should be able to produce up to two billion gallons of drinking water on a daily basis.

Reverse osmosis is a process in which pressure is applied to a membrane forcing water through it. The impurities in the water are trapped within the membrane as the water flows out the other side. Most of the separation occurs within the polymer matrix, which is the outer layer of the membrane. The membrane is known as the semi permeable, because it only lets the solute pass through while collecting the solvent.

Catalytic converters are devices using filtration for the benefit of the environment instead of strictly humans. The converter is put on automobiles in order to reduce toxic emissions into the environment that are made by the vehicle.

Water filtration is one of the most beneficial ideas the human race has proposed. Early forms of water filters allowed man to live in some of the harshest climates on earth. There will never be a time when water filters are not necessary for our survival.

Flower Delivery For All Occasions

Sunday, May 25th, 2008
by Aurelia M. Fleur

During this age of the internet where very few people have issues about shopping online, most shoppers have found it faster and easier to order flowers online mainly because online florists have a larger catalog then local florists. And because of special relationships with flower growers, sending flowers online is also much more affordable. This also means that when you buy flowers online, you’ll get a fresh-cut flower gift that hasn’t been sitting around a florist’s shop for several days.

The biggest holidays to send flowers are Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. But flowers can be sent for any major holiday and for all religious beliefs.

Naturally, during Valentines, red and pink roses are the first thought on everyone’s mind. But you can liven up your next Valentines day present by selecting roses of unique colors. Before you go for the old standby, think about whether your girlfriend or wife wouldn’t rather get yellow or lavender roses instead of red flowers. Not to mention, white, pink, peach, yellow and mini multi-colored roses will create a memory that never forgotten if you choose her favorite color instead.

Guys often enjoy blue roses. Also consider a mixed rose bouquet for birthday flowers such as blue and white roses, fire and ice roses, or patriotic red, white, and blue roses. If they match your boyfriend’s or husband’s favorite team’s colors, you’ll definitely score big.

Flowers for Mother’s Day are a popular favorite. What mother, mother-in-law, wife, or daughter doesn’t adore a stunning bouquet to show how appreciative you are? Again if you are unsure of which type of flowers are your mother’s favorite, you can always send long stem roses. Don’t hesitate to call someone who knows them well to discover their favorite floral variety. Make them feel loved and appreciated by going the extra mile.

For solemn occasions, such as a family or friend passing, sympathy flowers or funeral flowers and plants always make an appropriate empathy gift. Remember when delivering flowers to a funeral home or parlor, the director removes the personalized card from the funeral flowers arrangement and presents them to the bereaved all together. If you are worried about this, you can have a tasteful arrangement, gift basket, or plant sent to their home. It’s never too late to send a greeting of comfort and solace in loving memory.

Advice on maintaining your Garden Furniture

Sunday, May 25th, 2008
by Spencer Wilkins

Getting teak garden furniture can really enhance the usability of your garden. It can provide you with an area that allows you to relax and unwind. But if you intend to have this kind of furniture in your garden because of where the wood comes from it is important that you learn how to care for it correctly.

Although it is a hardwood making it very strong, it is still very likely to suffer from what the elements can throw at it. The wood in teak is much denser than some others and contains a resinous oil that can extend the life of the furniture. Yes, this oil can help to prevent the wood not only drying out but makes it far more resistant to moisture as well.

When it comes to buying such teak furniture for the garden, you can either purchase it in its natural raw state or that which has been treated using a teak oil. When you first get the furniture home, it is a golden color, but as time passes, the wood will eventually begin to fade a silver grey color instead.

If you are quite happy for the wood to turn silver grey then once it has there is very little you will need to do in order for it retain it. For those, who however would prefer their would to retain that golden hue then it is important that they apply a layer of teak oil.

For furniture, which will be outside in the garden throughout the year, you will need to apply the teak oil every 6 months. However, before you actually apply the oil you will need to clean the furniture first.

In order to clean, the wood you need to take some warm water to which you have added a mild detergent. Into this mixture place, a clean cloth and wring out until it is only damp (not soaking wet) and then gently wipe this over the surface of the furniture. This will help to remove any dust or grit that has built up. After wiping the furniture down with the water you need to let it dry completely before you go ahead an apply the oil.

Once the furniture is completely dry, you can start applying the oil. You can either do this by wiping it over the surface with a clean lint free cloth or by use of a spray gun. Using a cloth is much better as this allows you to spread the oil evenly over the surface of the wood. Once you have covered all the wood with the oil you need to leave it try until it is tacky to touch.

When the oil has got to this stage, you now need to take another lint free cloth (clean one) and use this for removing any oil that is left on the surface. Then about an hour after this, you need to take another clean cloth that you use to polish up the surface of your teak garden furniture.
