by Febbe Wallace

Outdoor lighting is one home improvement aspect that you can be creative about. There are simply so many styles and designs for you to choose from. One of the best kinds to pick however is outdoor post lighting. What benefits can you get from this kind of lighting and what sets it apart from other kinds of lighting?

Benefits

-Creates the Ambiance - Just like any other style of outdoor lighting, outdoor post lighting fixtures are not just mere lighting fixtures. They are also great decorative elements even when not in use. Your preferred kind of outdoor post lighting can easily complement your home theme and provide an inviting ambiance when you want to spend some night time outdoors. More than anything else though, outdoor post lighting fixtures are also best for security reasons. Aside from serving as thematic decorations, your lamp posts can clearly illuminate pathways, walkways, driveways, pools, gardens and patios. This can help prevent either accidents or intrusions.

Downlighting

Outdoor Downlighting - What sets outdoor post lighting apart from other styles of lighting is its ability to downlight. This simply means that post lights can provide illumination from above. This is the reason why street lights are often really large variations of outdoor post lighting fixtures. They can provide clear illumination in areas that they are placed in. Outdoor post lighting for homes is perfect for night time fun and dining because you can easily see everything that is going on especially if you are preparing food and drinks.

The Sizes

Outdoor post lighting fixtures actually come in many sizes. Traditional post lighting really had one size in the past. Old post lights towered way over human users and objects in gardens and paths. These days though, you can get decorative post lights that are a little shorter or even shorter than average human adults.

It is suggested though that if you have more than just aesthetics in mind, then you should opt for full length posts that are a little taller than you are. This will ensure that its downlight function is not impeded and you can therefore easily see what you need to do.

Designs

There are also many designs for outdoor lighting fixtures for you to choose from. For homes, accented or decorative post lighting are the best. You can pick a simple box type lamp, a European globe type lamp or an antique looking glass blown lamp to complement an elegant and classy home. Outdoor post lighting fixtures also come in various themes. You can pick a Western or Oriental theme or even a futuristic theme. Of course, there are also unusual designs such as lighting with intricately detailed or curved posts.

Electrical Options - A lot of outdoor post lighting fixtures are powered by electricity. These days though, you can also choose to buy solar powered lamp posts. These lamps can collect power from the sun during the day and use up the energy at night. These products are good to use if you want to save on both financial and energy resources.

Low Voltage

Most outdoor post lighting only use low voltage. This won’t just help you cut your expenses, it can also show some respect for your neighbors. If you want flexibility, you can install a dimmer.

Guidelines for Mortgage Refinancing

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008
by Andrew McAllister

Due to the current state of the economy and home foreclosures reaching alarming levels, the time has come to consider refinancing on your home mortgage loan. The Internet has made it easier and more convenient to compare multiple refinancing companies and locate the agencies with the best potential for helping you. As always, doing your research is imperative to ensuring you are getting what you need and only what you need.

Researching mortgage refinancing in the past required you to do the legwork yourself. This required making endless phone calls and setting up meetings with various refinancing experts for a one-on-one consultation. The Internet has made this process easier. Researching refinance companies for the best rates is as close as a click of the mouse. Many websites also offer to do the comparison-shopping for you.

LendingTree.com is one such company. The website uses the information entered on the site to make a comparison of a maximum of four potential refinancing agencies. The entire process is now convenient and less time consuming. The ability to have several options in front of you makes comparison-shopping a breeze.

The free online mortgage calculator will help determine how much is currently being paid in taxes and interest while comparing multiple refinance options to determine the amount of savings to be expected from the company you choose to work with.

Your potential refinance company is going to run your credit report in order to assess your situation and credit worthiness. You should know that you are entitled to one free copy of your own credit report every year, and availing yourself of this benefit will allow you to know what the underwriters at the refinance company will see before they see it. Just because you are considering online mortgage refinancing doesn’t mean the rules are different. Your credit will always play an integral part of the refinance process.

Before making a final decision on a refinance agency, you should discuss your situation with friends and family who have already been through a refinance themselves. Their experience can often help you decide which company is right for you. With so many companies out there fighting for your business, there are bound to be disreputable people out there. Let common sense prevail. Well established companies have a proven track record and are usually the best option based on their stability, but don’t overlook smaller lenders who can sometimes give you more personal service.

Searching online for mortgage refinancing information can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Using the tools that are available can simplify the process. Do not take anything for granted. Read everything including all the fine print details. Question what you do not understand and be sure to ask for clarification before signing on the dotted line.

Remember: Just because you’re asking for help doesn’t make you stupid, getting yourself stuck with a bad mortgage refinance loan does!

Babysitter Rates: How Much For A Sitter?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Rashel Dan

How much do you need to pay for a babysitting service? What is the average babysitter rate? These seems to be some of the most common questions asked these days. It is also a question that doesn’t have one definite answer. On the average, sitters are usually paid anywhere from $3-$12. This seems to be quite a wide bracket. This is only because there are several factors that determine the exact rate of pay.

Location

Different areas of location can have different rates. Urban areas in particular may have steeper rates than rural ones. You may be able to get an idea of rates in your particular area by looking for online average rates. You could also survey your neighbors on how much they would consider paying a sitter. If you have a particular preference for a sitter who lives far away, you may have to pay her extra due to transportation expenses.

Number of Kids

Another big determining factor for the rates is the number of kids. You can hardly expect a sitter to work for only $3 if she has to watch over three kids or more. Aside from the number of kids, you also have to consider the ages of the kids she has to look after. Younger kids and babies are naturally more difficult to watch over. They may be hard to discipline and they have many needs that require the babysitter’s attention. You would therefore have to pay a high rate if you have a toddler. You would have to pay an even higher rate if you have more than one toddler.

Sitter’s Age

Another factor affecting the babysitter rate is the age of the sitter. Teens aged 16-18 and adults would naturally have to be paid higher than younger sitters. Those who are in the 11-15 years old bracket may be contented with $3-$5 an hour. You need to be choosy though. You can’t just pick a young sitter just because she has a lower rate. You would really need an older teen or an adult sitter if you have lots of kids or if you have young kids that need minding. Young babysitters may not know how to handle small kids or respond to emergency situations.

Experience

Then, of course, there is the advantage of experience which you also have to consider. Those who have extensive experience would charge a lot. Those who have special first aid and emergency training would also want to receive more.

Work Details

These rates are only for the basic duties of babysitters. Often though, you would have to ask your sitter to perform a couple of extra tasks. You may have to pay extra if you expect her to cook for the kids or tutor them. Other work details that affect the rate include number of hours of work and specific hours of the day on duty. Night sitters may require high rates.

Specific Days on the Month

Sitters may charge more for particular days. Expect to pay more for sitters who work on rest days, holidays and Sundays.

There are other factors that can affect the babysitter rate. What you have to really do to find your sitter’s exact rate is to talk to your sitter. Negotiate on a rate that both of you will find acceptable.

Buying Mothers Day Flowers Online

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Aurelia M. Fleur

We give flowers to celebrate many special events. One of these special days is right around the corner. Mother’s Day is a perfect time to tell your own mother or your wife just how much you appreciate the care she gives each and every day. You don’t have to break the bank on flowers. Even simple and inexpensive arrangements will express your thoughts.

Online florists are being used on an increasing basis to send flowers for all occasions, including Mother’s Day. This is a very convenient way to send flowers without going to the local florist shop. You can also compare prices for arrangements from different online florists. Order flowers online and you could save yourself some time and money.

Online florists are quick and convenient. You have the option of paying by either credit card or debit card. Some florists do not want to accept credit cards, so they will either accept a check online, or offer some other form of online payment system. Secure sites are typically offered, so their customers will feel safer when using a credit card.

It might be possible to order flowers online from a lost cost florist. You can find these florists by using a major search engine with such terms as: discount, florist or flowers. A lot of the time it is not important if you are in the same area as these florists or not. They usually work with a network of florists in all areas.

If you do a bit of additional research, there might be a web-enabled florist down the street from the intended recipient. Eliminating the middle man might just get you a better deal on your order. However, a professional down the street may not be much more likely to deliver your choice in the best possible condition, and at the hour you specify.

When looking for a trustworthy florist, utilizing the search engines on the internet is a wonderful place to begin. A good online florist may suggest a specific type of flower or plant to give for Mothers Day. If you would like for a floral arrangement to be delivered, a online florist could also arrange for local deliveries to make it easier for you. For Mothers Day or any other day, utilizing the internet for a large selection of flowers is a wonderful way to show you care.

4 Careers in a Dental Hygiene School

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by Charles Edwards

Everyone will get to try out the dental chair at least once in his or her life, be it for a tooth extraction or a cavity filling. This also means that we will have another person sticking a hand into our mouth to inspect our teeth, gums, and mouth. We need to make sure that this individual is a trained professional who has passed through a dental hygiene school.

If you are also interested in dental care and hygiene, too, then you should undergo the study, training, and exams that is required from people with dental career before you can treat others.

But before you decide on entering a dental school, you should first know the different types of dental careers being offered. The following are four of the careers:

Dental Assistants

Dental assistants serve as the third hand of the dentist. They do the office tasks like ordering supplies, scheduling appointments, and tending to patients for the dentist.

The duties of dental assistants include the following:

- Charting patient treatment - Disinfecting and sterilizing instruments - Making casts of teeth and temporary crowns - Managing the dental office - Passing the proper instruments to the dentist - Polishing the teeth - Preparing dental filling material - Preparing the patients for treatment - Processing dental x-ray film - Providing oral hygiene instruction - Taking impressions or models of teeth for study purposes

Dental assistants are required to be graduates of accredited dental assisting training programs, but they are not required to have national certification offered by the American Dental Assisting National Board.

Dental assistants work in clinics, dental laboratories, private dental offices, dental schools, hospitals, and other public health places. On average, the annual salary of dental assistants was 14.08 dollars per hour in 2006.

Dental Hygienists

Dental hygienists are focused on the following:

- Applying of preventive agents like fluorides and sealants to teeth - Educating about oral health care, oral health problems caused by diet or tobacco, selection of toothbrushes, use of dental floss, etc. - Evaluating patient’s oral health - Exposing, processing, and interpreting dental x-ray films - Removing calculus deposits, plaques, and stains along the gum line

Dental hygienists need to graduate from an accredited program. After which, they are then eligible to take the state and national licensing exams. The state administers its own licensing examination, while the national exams are given by the American Dental Association.

Upon completion of the licensing process, the title as Registered Dental Hygienist is then given.

Dental Laboratory Technicians

A dental laboratory technician basically creates and repairs braces, bridges, crowns, dentures, and others using gold, silver, plastics, porcelain, and stainless steel according to the dentist’s prescriptions

Dental technicians work in commercial dental laboratories, dental offices, dental supply companies, and research facilities.

Dental technicians are also not required to obtain certification from the National Board of Certification of the National Association of Dental Laboratories.

The median annual income of dental technicians during 2005 was cited to be 32,012 dollars.

Dentist

Dentists are titled as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Dentists are general practitioners who supervise the work of dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dental laboratory technicians.

Dentists specialize in diagnosing, examining, preventing, and treating abnormalities, diseases, and injuries of gums, adjacent tissues, teeth, and structures of the mouth.

The American Dental Association named dental specialties for dentists:

- Endodontics or root canal therapy - Oral and maxillofacial surgery and radiology - Oral pathology, which studies mouth diseases - Orthodontics, which is the correction and prevention of poorly-positioned teeth - Pediatric dentistry - Periodontics, which is the treatment of the gums and bones of the mouth - Prosthodontics, or the making and applying of artificial teeth and dentures - Public health dentistry

Dentists work alone or in group practices. They work in companies, dental clinics, hospitals and laboratories, and public health agencies. In 2006, the average salary of dentists ranged from 136,600 to 186,368 dollars.

Studying dental care and hygiene is expensive, especially when you put up your own practice. You will have to spend a lot on equipment and staff. However, if you really want to pursue that field, then go to a dental hygiene school that offers the specialty you want to study.

Pet Question and Answer - Which Is The Best Pet For You?

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by Paige Harbold

* Question: How do I choose the pet that is right for my family?

In the first place, never buy a pet on a whim. Bringing a cute kitten or puppy home just because it was too cute to pass up can be a mistake.

Discuss the matter of pets together as a family before making the purchase. Remember to consider the following important issues: personal attention, grooming, playtime, daily feeding, vet care and house and potty training (if pet will be indoors). Consider asking each person in the household why they want a pet. Be sure your children understand that a pet is an important member of the family, not a toy, and that the pet’s needs must be considered just as much as the humans’ needs.

Take note of your lifestyle. Assuming, for example, you live in an apartment in the city or you need to work long hours. In this particular situation an easy-to-care-for-pet like a fish, bird or cat may be a good choice. If you do a lot of jogging or running, then a dog would be a good companion for you.

If you’d like to understand the needs of a potential pet, make a point of seeking out and talking to breeders and other pet owners. Find local pet shows and talk to the judges. Use Google to search for specific breeds to learn more about the pet you are thinking of purchasing. It goes without saying that you should consider the ages of your children when planning to add a new pet to your household. An often overlooked issue is to consider the life expectancy of the pet and how this will affect your children.

* Question: Is it best to get a pet at a pet store or an animal shelter?

It’s really a matter of individual choice. However, personally, I would say it is advisable to get pets from a shelter. The animals are well-cared for by the staff and are aware of an environment involving people. The shelter’s staff can help you find the pet that you want. The staff can tell you which dog enjoys long walks, which animal loves children and which cat likes to curl up on your lap. In addition, animals from a shelter have already undergone medical treatments such as immunizations, spaying and neutering.

If you plan on getting a pet from a pet store, be sure to get a briefing from the store owner regarding that animal’s behavior, especially with dogs, cats and other animals having a good amount of interactions with people.

* Question: What is the best way to decide which dog is best for me?

Use the following as a guide for finding the perfect dog for you:

- Spend time reading pet guides to learn about a specific dog breed’s temperament and background. Use Google to search the internet for more information about the more people-friendly types of dogs.

- Find a vet to discuss details about the characteristics of the breed you are looking for. Ask questions to understand more about the dog’s breed.

- If you decide to purchase your puppy from the pet store, be sure to ask for the dog’s status — for example, the dog’s history, physical or behavioral problems as well as anomalies of the breed. If you do not want to use a pet store, you can also find dogs and other animals at your county’s animal shelter or through a private breeder.

- Lastly, ask for your friends’ assessments and experiences with various types of dogs they have owned.

Are Address Books Still Necessary?

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by Wendy Jackson

Having an address book is necessary to keep in touch with your friends and family. An address book will help you arrange your contacts in a manner that makes it easier to find their contact information. Typically address books are easily available near your phone or in your pocket.

For junior soccer coaches, Tupperware agents or arrangement organizers an address book might be one of their most powerful tools. When you have all the addresses you need collected in one place it is much easier to reach the person you need when you need to. An address book is typically located near the home phone or in the car for those who work from that location.

The most typical information to keep in an address book is the usual information like the contacts full name, address and phone number. You can also store additional information like cell phone number, email or website. Many take notes about peoples birthdays in their address book as well. You can also store information about their favorite topics to talk about and information you will benefit from remembering about that particular person.

Many will argue that you do not need an address book when you got the white pages or other phone books. The problem with these is that there are too many people in them. You also need to have a phone book for every city you have friends living in. An address book will only have the contacts you use on a regular basis.

The later years we have been blessed with a lot of electronic devices to store our contact information on. You have your cell phone and your Outlook account, as well as several website and applications to store information about who you know and who you need to bee in contact with. The problem with these is the risk of loosing information when your cell phone dies, or when your computer gets too old to load your data.

One of the most popular designs in address books are the floral address books. They give a feel of something valuable that is worth taking care of. Floral address book designs also looks good beside the phone in our homes.

Steps to Evaluating a Singapore Maid Agency

Sunday, April 27th, 2008
by Charles Edwards

With the stress that comes from working, going to school, taking care of children and the elderly, and other household chores, getting a maid to help out is only practical. But you cannot just get any maid–you have to hire one from a proper agency to ensure that the maid will not be an added burden instead. Here are some important points to consider before you choose a Singapore maid agency to help you out:

Make sure the maid agency is licensed by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and accredited by the Consumers Association of Singapore for Good Business Practices (CaseTrust).

Presently, only 10 percent of over 700 agencies have been accredited by the CASE. The remaining 90 percent are probably accredited by the Association of Employment Agencies.

Licenses can only be granted by The Singapore Ministry of Manpower to agencies after a strict evaluation of their business practices. The director of the agency is required to attend and pass the Certificate of Employment Agency course, which spans for three months in the Singapore Polytechnic.

Accreditation is also given by The Consumers Association of Singapore for Good Business Practices to agencies and businesses that are dedicated to maintaining a superior business practice.

Choose an agency that has outstanding testimonials from its clients. An agency that conducts surveys and asks for feedback from its customers should be able to serve you well since they focus highly on customer service.

Your agency should give you a year-long guarantee. This means that if within 365 days so you are not satisfied with your maid, you can get a replacement free of charge.

The length of the guarantee and its conditions and benefits vary in different agencies. Some agencies give three months, half a year, or even 400 days.

For further assistance, the maid agency should have a family satisfaction program.

If an employer is unsatisfied with the performance of the maid, the customer care team can help. They can counsel the maid if any problems should arise.

To ensure that you and the maid you choose are compatible, see if the Singapore maid agency has a Match-Point System.

The Match-Point System was formulated to match the right maid to the employer. This is based on the experience, character, needs, and skills that the employer needs and the employee has.

Check the servies that the maid agency offers to its employess and customers. Common services include the following:

- Air tickets booking and purchasing

- Embassy endorsement

- Medical check-up for the helper

- Passport and work permit renewal

- Orientation for employment as a helper in Singapore

- Overseas helper recruitment

- Repatriation of maids

- Training in care for children, the elderly, the disabled, and the sick

- Training in cleaning, cooking

- Training in spoken English

- Work permit cancellation

- Workshops

If you are unsatisfied with the maid that you chose, you will also find that replacing or going back to the agency is another hassle. Therefore, to minimize the possibility of this happening, choose the right Singapore maid agency to assist you.

Dog Aggression: Three Tips for Dealing with It

Sunday, April 27th, 2008
by Rosana Hart

No matter where you live, you may run into dog aggression, and it may be caused by your dog. Sometimes it is between two dogs, whether neighbors or dogs in the same household. Sometimes it involves a dog attacking or biting a human, all too often a child. This article will give you three things you can do if you are dealing with an aggressive dog in your family. It will also provide you with a link to a resource that has much more information on this stressful situation.

The first step is to organize your dog’s living situation so that he can’t attack anyone. You’ll need to be protecting yourself, your family members, all other pets you have, and of course the dog himself. Everyone needs to be safe.

You can do this partly by crating the dog at times. If he is not used to being put into a crate, you will have to coax him in with treats and monitor his being in the crate to be sure he doesn’t hurt himself (or the crate) trying to get out. Never leave a dog in a crate for an extremely long time.

Another way of handling your dog’s whereabouts is by choosing his location in your home, which might be in a dog yard, an extra bedroom, or whatever you can put into service this way. You could do this in addition to using a crate or instead of it. If you have to keep two dogs apart because they have been fighting, then try to create something where two doors are between them. That way, you will be able to go between them much more easily than if you only have them one door apart.

Second, make an appointment, as soon as possible, with your veterinarian. Have him or her give your dog a complete examination. In a surprising number of cases, dog aggression comes about because the dog is suffering some pain that makes him cranky or seriously aggressive. There are actually dozens of possible physical conditions that could be causing the bad behavior. Maybe this step will solve your problem, but if not, at least you will have ruled it out.

Third, begin writing down short notes about the aggressive incident and what has happened since. Use a little notepad or some paper that you can keep in a convenient place, so it’s easy to make these notes. If you try to go back after a few days to reconstruct what happened, you may find that your memory is a bit unreliable about the timing and other details. This is normal, and all the more so when a situation is stressful. But these scribbles will have a place as you begin to create some new habits for training the dog and managing the situation.

And that is what you will want to do next. Research shows that when the owner of a dog who shows aggression takes an active role in managing the situation, the outlook is far, far better for the dog and those who love him.
