Giving A Gift Basket To Say Thanks

Thursday, February 14th, 2008
by Pamela Kazmierczak

Everyday we are thankful to different people in out lives for all that they do for us. It is up to us as individuals to come up with a suitable way to thank each person. I have found that giving a gift basket is a gesture which is always well received and understood by the person I am trying to show my appreciation to.

We are thankful to many people in our lives and for so many different reasons. You may be thankful for someone babysitting for you because you had to stay at work late or pick someone up for the airport. Maybe your thanks are due to all the little things someone has done for over time, or one big thing like introducing you to your spouse. The reasons are endless to when we are thankful and when we may want to express these thanks.

A gift basket can be the perfect way to show our gratitude. Gift baskets are varied in contents, sizing and pricing. It is not difficult to find one suitable for anyone for you appreciate.

For instance, sometimes I thank people with gourmet baskets as I know that they would appreciate them more than a regular thank you basket. Gourmet baskets tend to include more expensive food and drink items, sometimes sweets or alcohol, which may be appreciated by the recipient, but they may not have bought it themselves.

When we want to thank someone with a new child or a new child on the way it could be appropriate to thank them with a baby gift basket. Sometimes the best way to thank someone for helping you out is to help them out, and as all parents can attest to children, especially newborns, are expensive. Baby gift baskets are beautiful and functional.

Gift baskets not only have wonderful items inside, but they also have the bonus of being beautifully put together. Sometimes presentation is the key when giving a gift and gift baskets will give off a better presentation then other gifts such as a gift card to a favorite store. Giving a gift basket shows that we took the time to hand pick out a present to show just how much we appreciate someone.

Another important factor is that gift baskets do come in a variety of price ranges. You can spend a relative small amount or a large amount, but unlike a gift card the recipient will not know exactly how much you spent. Because of the way the gift baskets look, they will usually assume you spent more than you actually did.

Giving a gift basket is an easy way to show someone your appreciation. With the wide variety of types available it is easy to get one for someone you know very well, by catering your purchase to their needs, or someone you do not know as well by purchasing a generic thank you basket which says it all. Considering the amount of variety in each gift basket you do not have to worry that they will not like the present nor that it is something useless that they will never truly enjoy. When you need to say thank you to someone, consider buying them a gift basket.

Children’s Education: Sats! - A Daunting Educational Yardstick

Thursday, February 14th, 2008
by Dr. Noel Swanson

It’s time again for the dreaded and stress inducing SATS. Teachers and students across the UK are stressing. The principal or head teacher wants to look good on the national league tables. The teachers want everyone to know that they’re the best. As for the students, they’ve heard so much about these tests that they’re terrified of failing, or at least not doing their best.

Some children, of course, love tests and exams. But most would be quite happy to do without them, and some get so stressed by them that it can affect all areas of their lives - and their parents too! So, if you child is one of these, what can you do to help?

SATS (standardised achievement tests) were introduced as a way of assessing schools rather than children. The British government wanted to answer two questions: how well are the nation’s children doing, and how well are individual schools doing? To do this, they test children at age 7 to get a baseline score. The children are then tested again at age 11. The difference between the two scores is how much the children have learnt through their four years in school and is referred to as the “value added”. The aim is to raise the overall level of education among eleven year old, and SATS give the government a way of measuring this.

Most likely your question as a parent is “How does this score apply to my child?”. Actually, it doesn’t. The SATS don’t relate to individual children. When your child moves into secondary school, that school will do its own assessment. They don’t even use the SATS in their teaching plans. The SATS levels (scores) are very broad and don’t really address how well your child is or isn’t doing. Let’s assume that your 11 year-old child scores a 4, which is average. You still don’t know if it’s a high or low average. You probably won’t be surprised if he scores higher or lower. Parents and teachers generally know without the SATS if a child is ahead or behind his classmates. In other words his SATS scores won’t have any bearing on his education.

How do you handle the situation if your child is stressed out about the SATS? First, explain that it’s the school being tested, and not her. Tell her that her levels won’t matter. Tell her to do the best she can, but don’t force her to study or practice. She will have enough tests in her life and doesn’t need to stress out about these.

If your reassurance doesn’t t help, then talk to her teacher. Find out how he handles explaining the SATS to his students. Let him know that you have concerns about your child, and would like to work out a plan of mutual support.

Finally, remember that if you have any concerns about how well your child is progressing in school, do talk to the teacher, or possibly the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (the SENCO) or head teacher. Do not just sit at home worrying.

Create Picturesque Bathrooms With Accessories

by Leroy Calstard

Renovating your bathroom can breathe extra life into your whole house, however you must always remember that this room is functional. You cannot make it look clinical because then it wont do the job that it needs to do. To create a functional bathroom you can use accessories to make more of your space. There is a wide range of different bathroom accessories which should be considered, simple things that can simply be placed on a table, to complicated things that need installing.

Caddies Keep The Shower Clear

Even if you have a stunning bath or shower, the looks can be spoilt by clutter. Clutter always accumulates around the shower and bathtub. By using some clever accessories you can minimize how much of a problem this clutter will cause. You can for example use caddies to store shampoo and soap. Simple bathroom caddies are available which simply hang from the head of your shower. There are also more complicated caddies which require you drilling holes to fit them.

Treat Yourself To Warmth

Tiled floors are becoming very popular in bathrooms, these tiled floors can be made from stone or more commonly ceramics. However these tiled floors are quite cold, this can make them very uncomfortable to walk on, especially if you’ve just had a nice warm shower. To prevent this becoming a problem you should consider installing electric under floor heating. This must be installed before you lay your floor as it has to be fitted underneath the floor.

Even if you don’t want to install an electric heated floor there are alternatives. You could install a towel rack which is heated. This will mean that you will at least have a warm towel when you step out from the shower. These are examples of fairly large bathroom accessories, however they can improve how your bathroom feels.

Find A Place To Sit

You should defiantly consider finding somewhere to sit in your bathroom. Whether you intend to sit in the tub, or outside you defiantly need somewhere. Most of these accessories are small stools which allow you to wash your legs easier. These accessories will also make drying your feet a much easier job! Bathroom accessories really can be used to make your bathroom a more inviting and special place which you will enjoy spending time in.

Advice On How To Do Basement Waterproofing

Thursday, February 14th, 2008
by Pete Bennett

A house or building with a wet basement may not necessarily be poorly built. There are many houses and buildings that have basement water problems no matter how well they seem to be built. How to do basement waterproofing is essential in addressing problems like these. And one doesn’t have to spend too much money on labor either.

The Cause

Some foundations in some buildings are not reinforced with waterproof materials and this is one of the reasons that basements get wet or damp. Good waterproofing is needed to coat the foundations and the walls inside of a building basement as well as out. Waterproofing methods and materials are not as sophisticated as those found now and perhaps this is one reason that older buildings get wet basements. There are also some houses that are built next to lakes and rivers and so the land is also wet. In this case, it is even more important that waterproofing be done to the basement.

Knowing When To Waterproof

A new house or building should have waterproofed foundations exactly as it is being constructed. Efficient waterproofing will ensure a building basement of being dry for a very long time. Another reason to waterproof a basement and its walls as they are getting built is that one can waterproof the smallest of spaces and corners that are closed off during later construction and pipe installation.

Old Houses And Waterproofing

Anybody who owns a fairly old house will first one to check its basement walls. Drainage pipes and where they run is another thing to check. If walls and the floor need to be waterproofed, one will need to use a multi-layer membrane system which means that one has to cover cracks in the walls and foundations from the inside and the outside if possible. One way to do this is to use tar because it seals up cracks efficiently. If this doesn’t improve the condition of a basement, then the aid of professionals is called for. However, this can be done alone or with the help of friends.

The Outside

Another way on how to do basement waterproofing is to work around the exterior of the walls. Use a system that will intercept water when it collects around your basement area. You can do this by making a channel like system that will redirect water to flow out and farther away from your house and basement. You can also guide the water to a sump that can be pumped up later.

Rebuilding

One can also consider rebuilding the basement of a house or building. It can be done without destroying the foundations. The areas that need the most attention are the walls and floors by adding layers of cement and tar where it is required. The basement will be dry and the foundation will be stronger after this application. Any broken pipes should also be attended to and perhaps replaced.

Products For Waterproofing

Proper waterproofing means using the right products. The traditional way is to use cement for the walls and floors. Likewise, tar can be used to cover cracks and thus disallows water from seeping through those cracks. But there are new products on the market that are quite expensive to use, like epoxy. They have proven not to be more effective than traditional ways but there is promise in the technology to improve in the future. Epoxy can be injected into cracks in the wall and again this can be quite expensive.

A dry basement is important for any house. This is especially true for houses that are more than 20 years old. Remember that a damp basement usually means that there is a leak or damaged foundation somewhere that needs to be repaired. Learning how to do basement waterproofing and knowing when to waterproof will save your basement and perhaps a little money if done alone.

Home Security Systems Offer Protection For Your Home

Thursday, February 14th, 2008
by Peter Wilson

It’s not actually that difficult to install an alarm system by yourself, it is nothing more than a simple do it yourself job, it can even be completed in a weekend. First you should start by deciding on the type of alarm system that you want to fit. You may need to seek advice for this, as which type you choose will depend on the functions you require.

Most homeowners simply want an alarm that prevents people breaking into their house. Most alarms work as deterrents, while a few will try to catch the burglars when they try to break into your house. You can use a silent alarm for the purpose of catching the bad guys; however they won’t scare people off.

If a burglar is in your house while you are there then there is always a chance you will meet them while you are waiting for the police to come. Most people want to have an alarm with a very loud siren which is triggered as soon as the burglar enters the house. This will hopefully frighten and scare off the burglar without the risk of a confrontation. Most times the criminal will leave the house immediately as soon as the alarm is sounded.

What do you need to protect?

You should work out what needs to be protected by walking around the outside of your house. Take note of any points where someone could gain access to your house, and I’m not just talking about doors, you must also record windows big enough to crawl through. Some burglars are so determined that they will get into the house no matter what security system you put in place, these security systems will only normally frighten off opportunistic thieves.

When you are fitting a wired security system you must make sure that you hide all of the wiring, especially from the outside of the house. Most home alarm systems will notify the police of a break in using your phone line, this is only useful if you make sure the phone line cannot be cut from outside of the house. If the phone line has been cut then it’s pretty much useless.

The first type of alarm that you should consider using is a perimeter home security system. However these can create ways in if one of the sensors fails. You can use infrared motion sensors inside the house, however if you’ve got a pet then these will be prone to false alarms. You should think about your individual situation when designing and installing your own alarm.
