How Severe Is Your Acid Reflux Disease Symptom?

by Richal Peyton

Anyone can suffer from acid reflux disease symptom. Unfortunately, some of these symptoms are barely noticeable and the individual would not know about it until it is too late. If you think you have the condition, take note that symptoms vary from mild to severe. When your body experiences an acid reflux disease symptom, you may not be aware of it until you take some tests. Let’s talk about the varying degrees of symptoms and diagnosis of acid reflux disease.

Common Symptoms

A heartburn is one tell-tale sign of acid reflux. Heartburn is characterized by a burning sensation in the middle area of the chest behind the breastbone. Sufferers may experience some pain or discomfort as the sensation travels from the upper abdomen to the neck. This experience often worsens after eating or when lying down/bending over. Although heartburn is a common symptom of acid reflux, not all sufferers of this condition have it.

Signs Of Progression

Depending on the severity of your condition, heartburns may become persistent and the pain can last as long as 2 hours. Bitter acid may travel into the throat while you are sleeping and you may occasionally have a bitter taste in the mouth. You may then wake up with a very hoarse voice and experience persistent dry cough. Furthermore, you may start to wheeze or feel a certain tightness in your throat as though something is stuck inside. In children, symptoms include persistent cough and repeated vomiting.

Complications

In most instances, you will only realize the gravity of the condition after you have undergone screening and diagnosis. This is especially true in the case of reflux esophagitis, where the inner lining of the esophagus is severely damaged. Ulcers and scarring may develop, making it hard to swallow food and/or liquids. People who have reflux esophagitis have a somewhat increased risk of cancer of the esophagus.

If acid reflux disease is left untreated, complications can occur overtime. You may develop severe inflammation in the esophagus and stricture (severe narrowing of the esophagus). Problems may even reach the teeth and air passageways of the lungs. In other cases, underlying muscular abnormalities may develop and symptoms may persist even after treatment. Older individuals are more susceptible to these complications, especially if they’ve had acid reflux disease before.

Here are some complications that may occur due to acid reflux disease:

- Dental problems - Chronic throat problems - Stricture - Erosive esophagitis - Barrett’s Esophagus - Respiratory Disorders (Asthma) - Sleep apnea

These symptoms can be chronic and for some people, it can also be temporary. It may last for weeks, months or even years and may come back after treatment. Because the duration of symptoms varies greatly, we can never be too sure if we have a mild or severe case of acid reflux. The only way to be certain is to have a diagnosis. Tests often involve esophagoscopy, barium swallow, cardiac evaluation, esophageal manometry, and esophageal pH monitoring.

Any acid reflux disease symptom that’s diagnosed to be severe or unresponsive to initial treatment is most likely to require one or more of the tests mentioned earlier. Before symptoms worsen, see your doctor to have a diagnosis even if your symptoms are mild.

Unique Reading Journals

Friday, January 11th, 2008
by Kerry Beck

In some of my workshops this past summer I admitted that writing in my reading journal was a weakness. For that reason, I believe my children had not done well writing in their journals. I made some changes for the upcoming year. So far, we are off to a good start. Here are the ideas we began.

1. Buy unique journals for each family member - I purchased mine from Staples, one for myself and each of my children.

2. Use a small journal - I bought small journals, about 57. I thought the kids would not be so intimidated to record their thoughts if the page was smaller. The first day, my daughter actually wrote 1 1/2 pages for her first entry.

3. Talk about what each person wrote - We started the day with Family Group Time where we read out loud. But that’s another story. Each person tells something about what they wrote in their journal from the previous day. This makes us accountable each day. This activity won’t take more than 5 minutes per day, unless you’re on an interesting subject… Keep it short and simple to maintain enthusiasm.

4. Give the person the freedom to choose what to read - At this point in time, I let my children journal what book they want. These entries are in response to either our reading aloud or their own rindividual reading. Making their own descisions helps them take control of their academics. Interest on books depend upon each reader, so the best option is to let your kids choose.

5. Make it fun & easy - As they begin the reading journal process, I want it to be fun and easy for them. They can simply retell what happened in their book as we begin daily reading journals. As the weeks go by, I will encourage them to record their thoughts about the book. This will develop higher level thinking skills as they analyze or give their opinion about the reading.

When these strategies are used on your own pupils, you will soon find out that their writings, readings and discussions have improved. Where ever it may be, in a home setting or the classroom setting, theses strategies will augment your children’s reading and writing skills.

A Room With Beautiful Bamboo Baskets

Friday, January 11th, 2008
by Adam Peters

The article is about bamboo baskets. It discusses their beauty and style. and how they can be used for the purpose of decoration.

My daughter and a friend of hers recently moved into their first apartment. In past they both had lived together in dorm rooms in college, but this was first apartment in their life. Both girls had started jobs in their chosen careers, but they were also paying off student loans so they did not have a great deal of extra money for decorating their apartment. They already had the basic bedroom furniture with them so their prime focus was to decorate the living area. They wanted the apartment to be unique without any externally extended help. It was their wish to take some time from their busy life to decorate their apartment and before having their parents over for dinner.

Six weeks later, after we had helped the girls move in they invited us to dinner. Since, my daughter had been a bamboo fan ever since she was a little girl I decided to get one bamboo basket for her. I bought one and filled it with stuff that transformed it into a manicure kit. At the sight of the basket my daughter couldn’t help giggling. Upon entering her house I discovered that she was laughing so hard because bamboo was all she and her friend had used to decorate the house as bamboos are easy to afford and functional. They had bought a lot of bamboo baskets and grass mats to function as rugs. Also the food on the dining table was laid under bamboo placemats.

My daughter was very anxious to show us her bedroom as she had taken special care to decorate it. The same oriental theme, which she had all over the house, was followed in here too. For substituting the lamp stands she had used 3 feet tall bamboo baskets that were shaped like vases. In her closet she had befitted another bamboo basket serving the purpose of a shelf. The bathroom was the last area left to be decorated.

The gift basket which, I was a bit unsure of while purchasing fit perfectly with the rest of the dcor of the room. It was done in a color tone which could have easily matched with any family of bamboo color. My daughter needed some more baskets to place her towels in them. She said she would bring in others matching the color tone of the one I had bought so that they could all go together.

My daughter has a wonderful taste when it comes to home dcor. She has her way with bamboo sticks and can create wonders out of them. And the best thing about bamboos is that they are reasonable and long lasting.
